Exteriors
Only ever taken on in summer months it can cover many areas, but it has been consistent in past years that a high percentage of our work during this time will be joinery repairs and exterior painting. It’s always a great idea for anyone to take the time during these dryer months to make good any damage incurred over winter. It could simply be a coat of paint on your windows or front door which freshens up and helps maintain a weatherproof coating, or repairing boundary fences maybe damage in a storm. All of these little jobs if done regularly mean there is often no need for one big job...saving money in the long term.
Here’s an example of work we carried out in the past to restore a dormer, which at 7 meters from ground level plus difficult access to its eve’s, had put its past owners off from having any work carried out. It remained untouched for approximately 15 years as calculated by the present owners, this is not a timescale ever recommended.
We have used this job as an example because it is an extreme case. At most you should try to recoat exterior wood at least every 2-3 years high access areas like this you may get away with 4-5 years. Most high end modern paints carry a 5 year guarantees but only if you follow the tight guidelines laid out in their instructions.
On this job the weatherboards had sustained the most significant damage from weathering, the eve’s had housed swallows for many years and the combination of nesting and all that goes with that, had badly affected the paint and wood. The whole structure was in a state of poor repair.
Most wooden structures if left for any time untreated, will degenerate quickly here time had had good time to work we replaced all rotten timber with a marine ply and treated wood then all remaining wood and front facer boards were sanded back to bare severe cracks were repined back into shape and filled then re-sanded. Now treated, sealed and painted again they will look good for several years to come. Keeping the outside of your home in good condition is one of the best home improvements you undertake and a little maintenance done each year will always repay you back, after all your home will be the most expensive item you will ever own, yet most people maintain their cars more frequently.
